Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a 2005 film adaptation of Roald Dahl's 1964 novel of the same name, written by John August. The film, starring Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka and Freddie Highmore as Charlie Bucket, was directed by Tim Burton . The story tells of young Charlie Bucket's adventures at the chocolate factory of eccentric chocolatier Willy Wonka. Along with four other children, Charlie is one of five Golden Ticket winners; he finds one in his chocolate bar. They all go in disguise to the factory (ostensibly to avoid publicising such a valuable find). However things don't quite turn out they way they thought. The children are faced with a series of dangerous challenges in the factory that may lead to Charlie's Golden Ticket being revoked."Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" was filmed at Pinewood Studios in England, with production lasting from April to August 2004. Designers created a five-story Chocolate Room, filling it with 40,000 gallons of chocolate (90,000 lbs). The film was originally scheduled to be released on June 30, 2005; however Warner Bros. decided to move the date up on the film's original release date because "Madagascar" (another DreamWorks Animation film) opened on that day instead of two weeks later on July 14. "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" opened on June 3, 2005 in the United States and Canada in 3,711 theaters. The film earned $7.4 million on its first day of release, putting it in second place behind Pixar's "Cars". The film had a box office gross of $116,554,786 in the United States and Canada and a total of over $470 million worldwide. In its opening weekend in North America it earned $60 million from 3,711 theaters averaging about $18,000 per venue placing number one for its first three-day weekend against Pixar's "Cars". The film went on to gross a total of $4.45 million in its second weekend. In its third weekend the film dropped down to number three, falling 62% from the previous frame's gross, grossing a total of $2.6 million. The film received mixed reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 52% based on 212 reviews and an average score of 5.8/10 with the critical consensus reading: "It goes without saying that Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka is the main draw here, and it's hard to tell whether he plays his scenes for comedy or campiness... but the film's animation is uneven, and there isn't enough in the way of thrills or humor to make up for its weaknesses." Roger Ebert wrote that the film "is a good-natured spoof on a certain kind of movie about a child genius," but added "[it] can be a little over-the-top". This was the first DreamWorks Animation feature film to be released in 2,700 theaters. The film opened in second place behind "Madagascar", which opened on the same day. "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" grossed $39,000,000 in its opening weekend, placing it at number two behind "Madagascar". cfa1e77820
